How a Local Passion Turned into a Competitive Basketball Club

In the heart of Oxted, Surrey, something special began to take shape during one of the most uncertain periods in recent memory. While the world slowed down during the COVID-19 lockdowns, three friends—Julien, Alex, and myself—found a way to stay connected, stay active, and rediscover a shared passion for the game of basketball.

It all started at Mill Lane Recreation Ground in Hurst Green. With gyms closed and leagues on pause, we met outside to shoot around and play casual pickup games—nothing too serious, just a love for basketball and a way to clear our minds. But those laid-back sessions quickly grew. Word spread. Friends invited friends. Within six months, our three-man crew had turned into a group of nearly 30 dedicated players meeting up every week.

As momentum built, we made the leap to indoor sessions. First, we secured court time in Caterham. Then, we found a new home at Hazelwood School, where we now train twice a week on Monday and Thursday evenings. The move indoors brought structure, regularity, and a stronger sense of identity. With over 50 players passing through the sessions, the time felt right to make it official.

That’s when the Oxted Rhinos Basketball Club was born.

Since then, we’ve proudly competed in the Surrey Basketball League for three seasons. What began as a grassroots effort has become a disciplined, competitive squad with a deep roster of talented, experienced players. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to community. We’re not just here to win games—we’re here to build something that lasts, something that represents Oxted with pride.

Now, we’re looking ahead.

We’re thrilled to announce plans to launch a Youth Development Program that will bring the game of basketball to young people across East Surrey. Our goal is to create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment where kids can learn the fundamentals of the sport, build confidence, and develop both as athletes and individuals.

From casual outdoor games to structured league play and a growing vision for the future, the journey of the Oxted Rhinos is far from over. And we’re just getting started.
